FAMILY ISN’T ALWAYS”EVERYTHING…”

“Family is everything” is a saying I have heard a lot about over the years. As a teen I thought this meant all families were wonderful with minor problems here and there.

But as I grew older and began working in the role of a therapist — seeing and hearing many things (and experiencing them myself) — I learned that family is NOT everything when it hurts.

If you really think about this saying the meaning is very limited. If you lose your family (or they pass away) or your family is estranged because of trauma, does your life completely stop?

No. In this video, I reframe this saying and give you some insights on why this isn’t true.
